| EDITOR'S NOTE
Hello readers,
It was an eventful weekend for President Trump and his administration, but not in a particularly good way.
The president reversed course and said he would not host the G-7 summit at his own Doral resort in Miami, just two days after chief of staff Mick Mulvaney announced the decision and triggered a wave of ethics concerns. Trump blamed outcry from the media and Democrats for his backtrack, but there was plenty of Republican pushback, too.
Mulvaney had to deal with his own mess. On Sunday, he attempted to further explain his claim, which he later walked back, that Trump had indeed sought a quid pro quo with Ukraine over military aid. The uproar led to questions about whether Mulvaney would quit or get fired. Yet, while he faced withering questioning from Fox News host Chris Wallace, Mulvaney said he wasn't thinking about quitting the chief of staff role – "Absolutely not. Absolutely positively not."
On Monday, meanwhile, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is also embroiled in the Ukraine scandal, tried to set a more affirmative tone for the administration. He slammed China for retaliating against U.S. businesses whose employees have weighed in on Chinese political matters – a hot topic given China's recent harsh response to the NBA over a league executive's tweet in favor of pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong.
"We think it's completely inappropriate for China to attack U.S. businesses whose employees or customers exercise their fundamental freedoms here in the United States," Pompeo told CNBC's Wilfred Frost. The interview will air in full during "Closing Bell," which starts at 3 p.m. ET.
