ETF flows this year: flat into U.S. and International equities, strong into fixed income. Total ETF assets under management (AUM) continue to grow, with total AUM topping $4 trillion for U.S.-based ETFs as we head into the end of October. Despite the fact that the broader equity markets are up roughly 20% this year, inflows into stock ETFs are roughly flat. But investors continue to put money into bond ETFs, which are growing at a double-digit pace. Sector winners 2019. China's economy may be weak, but Chinese consumers are still buying. The Global X MSCI China Consumer Staples ETF, a basket of Chinese consumer staples stocks, is among the top sector winners this year. It's been a good year for solar stocks, home construction, and semiconductors as well.
Do zero commissions matter? Apparently they do. Charles Schwab set off a race to zero commissions in early October. TD Ameritrade and others followed. Now TD Ameritrade CEO Tim Hockey says the firm has seen a 49% increase in average daily new account openings compared with what was seen in the quarter ending Sept. 30th.
