An experimental antiviral pill developed by Pfizer has shown promise in treating Covid. Details below. Children ages 5 to 11 in the U.S. are now getting vaccinated. Meg Tirrell has the details. Holly Ellyatt reports on Europe's resurgence in Covid cases.
| | Pfizer says pill cuts the risk of hospitalization or death by 89% | Pfizer said that its easy-to-administer Covid pill, paired with a widely used HIV drug, cut the risk of hospitalization or death by 89% in high-risk adults. It's now the second antiviral pill behind Merck's to demonstrate strong effectiveness for treating Covid at the first sign of illness. If cleared by regulators, it would likely be a game changer in the ongoing global pandemic fight. Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla told CNBC the company plans to submit its data to the FDA before Thanksgiving. -Berkeley Lovelace Jr. | | | | Kids start getting vaccinated with Pfizer vaccine | A panel of CDC advisers voted unanimously to recommend Pfizer/BioNTech's vaccine for 5- to 11-year-olds, citing its benefit to protecting kids directly, as well as its ability to curb disruptions to in-person learning and overall transmission. They spent a significant portion of the meeting discussing the risk of myocarditis, which some experts suggest could be lower in this age group both because the vaccine is one-third the dose of the adolescent and adult vaccine, and because myocarditis typically doesn't affect younger kids as much. CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky signed off on the recommendation within hours of the vote, and the first kids started getting their shots right away. -Meg Tirrell | | | | Fauci says Rand Paul is 'egregiously incorrect' about controversial research | White House chief medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci and Sen. Rand Paul exchanged blows at a Senate hearing Thursday over Paul's claims that the National Institutes of Health supported gain of function research in Wuhan, China. Paul called on Fauci to resign, accusing the NIH of funding experiments that make existing pathogens more contagious in hopes of understanding future infectious diseases. Fauci called Paul's line of questioning an "egregious misrepresentation" and pushed back on the theory that Covid-19 originated in a laboratory. -Robert Towey | | | | WHO: Europe once again at the epicenter of pandemic | Europe is facing a resurgence in Covid cases, according to the WHO's Dr. Hans Kluge, who warned this week that the region was once again "at the epicenter of the pandemic." Kluge, the WHO's regional director for Europe, which comprises 53 countries across Europe and central Asia, said the number of new daily cases was nearing record levels. Last week, with nearly 1.8 million new cases and 24,000 new deaths reported, the WHO's European and central Asia region saw a 6% increase in infections and a 12% increase in fatalities, compared to the previous week. -Holly Ellyatt | | | | Moderna cuts 2021 forecast for Covid vaccine sales | Moderna shares dipped sharply this week after it cut its Covid vaccine sales forecast for the year and missed earnings and revenue expectations for the third quarter. The company said some doses for delivery this year have been shifted to early 2022 amid production issues and as it prioritizes deliveries to low-income countries through COVAX, the U.N.-backed effort to share coronavirus vaccines. It now expects Covid vaccine sales of between $15 billion and $18 billion this year, down from an earlier projection of $20 billion. -Berkeley Lovelace Jr. | |
