Your guide to how Washington shapes business and the economy

| FRI, NOV 05, 2021 | | | Good afternoon,
This is CNBC politics news editor Spencer Kimball filling in for Mike Calia. House Democrats were working to end an impasse over President Joe Biden's domestic agenda, with votes on his infrastructure, social and climate spending bills potentially in the works for as soon as today. Biden touted this month's strong jobs report, but women and Black workers are still being left behind by the economic recovery. And the White House's Jan. 4 vaccine mandate for private businesses is now officially on the books, with Texas threatening a lawsuit to halt implementation of the requirements. Here are some of the stories we are following at CNBC: - Biden lauds strong jobs report: The president had reason to celebrate Friday, with nonfarm payrolls increasing by 531,000 and unemployment falling to 4.6%, as the House aims to pass his domestic agenda.
White House reporter Christina Wilkie writes: "The strong jobs growth and the potential legislative win could hardly come at a more important time for the president. Despite the recent job gains, inflation and a global supply chain crisis continue to dominate many Americans' sentiments about the economy."
Unemployment held steady for Black workers and actually increased for women despite the overall progress. "The October jobs report highlights the persistent disparity in the labor recovery for women and Black Americans," markets reporter Hannah Miao and data editor Nate Rattner write.
- Businesses get holiday reprieve for vaccine mandate: Biden's long awaited and hotly contested vaccine mandate for the private sector went into effect Friday, with an implementation deadline set for Jan. 4.
Though the implementation period gives businesses some breathing room, Texas has threatened a lawsuit to halt the requirements, rejecting them as unconstitutional. The administration believes it's on firm legal ground, with little patience for the challenges.
"A virus that has killed more than 745,000 Americans with more than 70,000 new cases per day currently is clearly a health hazard that poses a grave danger to workers," Labor Department Solicitor Seema Nanda said during a presser this week.
- GOP stomps Democrats in Virginia: Republican Glenn Youngkin is now the governor-elect in the commonwealth, defeating Democrat Terry McAuliffe. The governor's race in New Jersey was also much closer than expected, with incumbent Democrat Phil Murphy barely eking out a victory. That's a troubling sign for Biden's party as Washington gears up for next year's midterms.
Politics reporter Annika Constantino writes: "Youngkin's victory marks a sharp turn in a state that has leaned blue over the past decade. President Joe Biden won it last year by a 10-percentage point margin." Thanks for reading CNBC Politics. Thoughts? Tips? Email us at CNBCPolitics@nbcuni.com.
