Your guide to how Washington shapes business and the economy
| FRI, NOV 19, 2021 | | | Good afternoon,
President Biden's elephantine social safety net and climate change package cleared the House. The administration hit the brakes on enforcing its business vaccine mandate as it works its way through courts. And the U.S. is considering a so-called diplomatic boycott of next year's Beijing Winter Olympics. Here are some of the stories we are following at CNBC: - Biden bill clears a massive hurdle: The president's bid to dramatically expand the American social safety net while making the biggest U.S. government investment in fighting climate change is now in the hands of the Senate. The House passed the $1.75 trillion measure Friday, but that price tag could well come down a bit in the next few weeks as senators will tweak the bill.
CNBC's Jacob Pramuk writes: "Multiple senators will push for changes to the bill's provisions including paid leave and taxes along the way. Any tweaks will require another vote in the House, where House Speaker Nancy Pelosi can afford three defections."
- U.S. hits pause on vaccine mandate enforcement: The Biden administration hit the brakes on enforcement of its requirements for Covid vaccination and testing for American businesses. The decision came as the rule is tied up in courts, and could potentially wind up in the Supreme Court.
CNBC's Spencer Kimball writes: "Republican attorneys general, private businesses and national industry groups such as the National Retail Federation, American Trucking Associations, and National Federation of Independent Business have sued to overturn the requirements. Labor unions are asking the courts to expand the requirements to cover smaller businesses and protect more workers."
- Beijing freeze out? Biden and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, recently held a "summit" over a video call. While both sides agreed to more cooperation and communication, there are still many sticking points left between the world's two biggest economies. One of them is the Winter Olympics next year in Beijing, and the U.S. is considering a diplomatic boycott of the games, according to Biden.
CNBC's Christina Wilkie writes: "Human rights activists have long called for a global boycott of the Beijing Olympics, which they have labeled the 'Genocide Games.' They have also urged the International Olympic Committee to postpone or relocate the events. But Western governments have generally balked at the idea of a full boycott of the games, a move they regard as unfairly punishing athletes for the misdeeds committed by the host government."
