The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose more than 200 points to a record, while the S&P 500 gained nearly 0.4% for its seventh straight positive day. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite edged up 0.2%, also hitting an all-time high. The U.S. job market snapped back in October, with nonfarm payrolls rising 531,000, more than the 450,000 expected by economists polled by Dow Jones. The unemployment rate fell to 4.6%, the Labor Department reported Friday. "This is the strong progress from the job market that we wanted to see," said Jeff Buchbinder, equity strategist at LPL Financial. "Some of the pandemic-driven headwinds preventing people from taking open jobs have started to abate, and given strong demand, we expect to see even better numbers in the months ahead." Pfizer shares closed 10.8% higher after the company said its Covid-19 drug, used with an HIV drug, cut the risk of hospitalization by 89%. The news boosted classic reopening plays like airlines and cruise line operators. United Airlines gained 7.2%, and American Airlines jumped 5.7%. Carnival popped 8.3%, and Norwegian Cruise Line rallied 7.8%. |
