Consumers are a big focus in the week ahead, with government data on retail sales expected as well as some big box store earnings. The retail sales report is expected to show a strong gain, even after consumer sentiment was reported at a 10-year low in the past week.
Walmart, Home Depot and Target are among the companies reporting earnings, and investors will be listening to what they have to say about supply chain issues, prices and margins.
Inflation, which created some headwinds for stocks in the past week, is likely to remain a hot topic for investors. Regional manufacturing reports from both the New York Federal Reserve and Philadelphia Fed will show activity in their areas, but also what is happening with prices.
President Joe Biden meets Monday with China's President Xi Jinping in a virtual meeting. Investors are watching for any signs of warming in the relationship between the world's two most powerful countries.
