House will vote next week to prevent a government shutdown for another month | | | THU, NOV 14, 2019 | | | | WHERE BUSINESS AND POLITICS CONVERGE | | Hi readers,
Once again, we're just days away from a government shutdown. With a November 21 deadline looming, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer told reporters that the House will vote next week on a short-term bill to keep the government running through December 20. This move would give the House and Senate more time to hash out longer-term funding bills. We'll see!
Federal Reserve Chairman Jay Powell testified on Capitol Hill this week, and said today's economy presents "a pretty sustainable picture" and that the possibility of a "day of reckoning could be quite far off." Powell did issue warnings about several dangers such as a manufacturing slowdown, trade headwinds, and called the path of government debt unsustainable. Finance editor Jeff Cox has a full recap.
Elizabeth Warren's feud with billionaire executives continues into another week. The Democratic presidential hopeful launched a new campaign ad, airing on CNBC today, which takes aim at Leon Cooperman, TD Ameritrade CEO Joe Ricketts, former Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein, and tech investor Peter Thiel. The ad has already elicited a response from Cooperman, who called into CNBC, and from Blankfein, who tweeted that he was "surprised" to be featured. Brian Schwartz and Kevin Breuninger have all the details.
