Walmart is aggressively pursuing a massive digital transformation, making big investments in AI and automation. They're also seeking to develop a deeper relationship with customers by testing an in-home delivery service. The company has raised its minimum wage, and has argued that the Federal minimum wage is "lagging." As CEO of the nation's largest private employer, Doug McMillon is a central player in defining the future of work.
Despite his mild manner and laid-back Southern charm, McMillon is laser focused on the future - he knows that just because Walmart is dominant now does not mean they can't, or won't, go the way of erstwhile competitors like Sears or Kmart. That means he needs to service his legacy business while also transforming his massive workforce for the future – from hiring thousands of data scientists to build predictive models on consumer behavior, to finding delivery people who consumers will trust to come into their homes to take home delivery to the next level – by unloading groceries for you.
We learned this week during his on-stage interview with Becky Quick at our Evolve Summit [link below] that that trust has to go both ways. The biggest hazard for his delivery teams? Dogs. While there's a box for consumers to check on the Walmart delivery app if they have a dog, sometimes users forget to do so … and we're sure that sometimes, their furry friends might be a little more intimidating to a Walmart deliverer than they are to their own family. So it's a work in progress, like a lot of the initiatives going on at Walmart.
With 2.2 million employees in an industry in the midst of a massive transformation, it's a work in progress that may tell us a lot about the future of work itself.
Note: There won't be an @Work newsletter due to the holiday next week.
