Firms ponder response to Schwab commission cut. Charles Schwab's decision to cut commissions to 0 has the competition scrambling. While competitors like TD Ameritrade have followed suit, others are still trying to craft a response. Investment News reports that LPL Financial, the largest independent broker-dealer in the country, with more than 16,000 advisors, is "exploring its options" on whether to further reduce commissions. LPL has recently reduced commissions on certain products, cutting ETF transaction charges this quarter from $9.00 to $4.95 on two of its proprietary advisory platforms, Investment News reported.
European ETFs see pickup in volume on Brexit. Several European ETFs have seen notable increases in volume this month as Brexit negotiations have intensified. iShares MSCI United Kingdom ETF (EWU), market-cap-weighted index of British companies, and the SPDR Euro Stoxx 50 (FEZ), a market-cap-weighted index of 50 of the largest eurozone companies, have seen increased volume in October.
Pot ETFs stabilize — a little — after a horrible couple months. Most marijuana ETFs are down 20% to 30% since mid-August, but are up two to three percent this week. Several marijuana ETFs have entered the market since the legalization of marijuana in Canada last year; most stocks held in these ETFs are Canadian.
