A NOTE FROM BOB
What's hot in ETF investing? Everyone is trying to figure out how to cash in on this year's crazed, hyperkinetic trading. Tech? Reflation stocks? Growth? Value? Meme stocks? Recently we had Jamie Wise from BUZZ ETF trying to pick hot stocks based on social media mentions. This week our guest on ETF Edge was Matthew Tuttle from Tuttle Tactical Management who has just registered for a FOMO ETF. He's joined by Sylvia Jablonski, Chief Investment Officer at Defiance ETFs which runs the brand-new Hydrogen ETF (HDRO)--clean energy is another hot investing meme for 2021. Harry Whitton from Old Mission also joined us with a perspective on ETF trading trends.
There's an ETF for everything. Except bitcoin. Despite years of pressure, the SEC has yet to approve a bitcoin ETF. Last week, WisdomTree was the latest to seek approval. That's the third or fourth one this year. VanEck filed at the end of December, Valkyrie Bitcoin Fund filed at the end of January.
The latest annual report on the state of the ETF industry from Brown Brothers Harriman had three main findings: 1) ETF allocation continues to rise across the globe, 2) thematic ETFs--the breakout investment style of 2020--is continuing hot in 2021, with 80% of global ETF investors planning on increasing exposure to thematic ETFs this year, and 3) 2020 marked the dawn of semi-transparent active ETFs in the United States and demand for active ETFs may be strong in 2021 globally.
