What's in the next coronavirus relief package?

VIEW IN BROWSER | SUBSCRIBE FRI, JUL 24, 2020 CNBC POLITICS EDITOR'S NOTE Hello,   GOP senators and the White House have been toiling away this week on a new coronavirus relief bill. Leaders on both sides of the negotiations say there has been progress, even a deal in principle on the shape of the overall package. But we'll still need to wait until next week to find out exactly what's going to be in it, according to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.   Here's what we know for now: there will be some form of direct payment to Americans, and there will be an extension of enhanced unemployment benefits, although likely at a lower level than they are now. The package is also expected to include billions of dollars to help schools reopen this fall. It won't, however, include a payroll tax cut that President Trump and some of his advisors were pushing for.   Here are other stories the CNBC Politics team has been covering: Trump canceled the in-person parts of the upcoming Republican National Convention in Jacksonville, as Florida has become a hot spot for the coronavirus. Trump and the GOP originally moved the convention to Florida because they bucked at social distancing restrictions in North Carolina, the original planned site. China-U.S. relations are becoming more fraught by the day. After the U.S. ordered the Chinese consulate in Houston closed, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo delivered a fiery speech condemning the communist nation's actions on the world stage. China retaliated by ordering the closure of the U.S. consulate in Chengdu. The disturbing case of Ghislaine Maxwell, who is accused of aiding the now-dead Jeffrey Epstein in his sexual abuse of teenage girls, took some more turns this week. One judge refused to issue a gag order in her criminal case, while another judge ordered documents from previous legal proceedings involving Maxwell to be unsealed.
