EDITOR'S NOTE
Hello,
GOP senators and the White House have been toiling away this week on a new coronavirus relief bill. Leaders on both sides of the negotiations say there has been progress, even a deal in principle on the shape of the overall package. But we'll still need to wait until next week to find out exactly what's going to be in it, according to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Here's what we know for now: there will be some form of direct payment to Americans, and there will be an extension of enhanced unemployment benefits, although likely at a lower level than they are now. The package is also expected to include billions of dollars to help schools reopen this fall. It won't, however, include a payroll tax cut that President Trump and some of his advisors were pushing for.
