EDITOR'S NOTE
Hello readers,
At first blush, the latest NBC/WSJ survey looks like more bad polling news for President Trump. His approval rating is still underwater, and nearly 70% of respondents dislike him personally.
But, as CNBC's John Harwood points out, there's plenty in the new poll that should make Trump hopeful about his reelection chances next year. Mainly, the fact that voters are just as uneasy about his three main potential rivals: Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders. (Another recent NBC/WSJ poll showed Biden and Warren pulling further ahead of the dwindling Democratic pack.)
The new poll, released Sunday, also shows that Trump has some policy advantages over the Democratic field. While majorities oppose his calls to repeal Obamacare and to build a U.S.-Mexico border wall, bigger majorities oppose giving government health care to undocumented immigrants and nixing private insurance as part of "Medicare for All."
Then there are the economic numbers, which remain pretty solid. Most voters see the economy either staying the same or getting better next year. Less than 20% see things getting worse. So, for the moment at least, the status quo favors Trump.
