Big Tech descended on Washington today. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos kicked things off this morning, unveiling a new plan to tackle climate change with a pledge to meet the goals of the Paris climate agreement 10 years ahead of schedule. The retail giant also agreed to purchase 100,000 electric delivery vans from vehicle manufacturer Rivian.
Over on Capitol Hill, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg spent the afternoon meeting with lawmakers on the heels of a private dinner last night with half a dozen senators. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., who organized the dinner at Facebook's request, shared details about what was discussed in an interview with CNBC (watch below). Sen. Hawley, R-Mo., who spoke to reporters following his meeting with Zuckerberg, said that he told the Facebook CEO to prove he's serious about data and sell WhatsApp and Instagram. This was Zuckerberg's first visit to D.C. since testifying last year about Facebook's privacy practices.
At the U.S. Trade Representative's office, U.S. and China deputy trade negotiators resumed face-to-face talks for the first time in nearly two months. Vice President Mike Pence, in an interview at CNBC's Delivering Alpha conference, said that the White House remains "hopeful, but the question now is whether or not China wants to do a deal."
