As Women's History Month comes to a close, we're taking a look at women in leadership within major companies. Over, the past five years, the number of S&P 500 C-suite positions held by women has grown. In 2018, female CFOs accounted for 13% and that has now grown to 18%. As for female CEOs, that number has grown from 4.7% to 8%. In the Fortune 500, women account for 10% of CEOs which is an all time high.
While those gains should be celebrated, women in the top job are still a minority across most sectors and are even declining in others. The number of women leaders in tech has fallen to 28% from a high of 33%.
When women are in positions of leadership, the benefits can be widespread. Studies show having women in the boardroom or in the C-Suite promotes further diversity throughout a company. In addition, S&P 500 companies that have more than 25% of female executives are more likely to achieve higher profitability than their competitors. Although there is still progress to be made it is important to highlight the ongoing victories for women in the workforce. For more on the world of work, check out our Key Stories roundup below.
