The Biden administration laid out its plan to fend off Covid this winter with a focus on boosting vaccination rates among the elderly, particularly those who live in nursing homes.
Less than 50% of nursing home residents have received their omicron boosters, potentially leaving them vulnerable to severe Covid in the months ahead.
New data from the CDC has shown that the updated shots are 84% effective at keeping seniors out of the hospital, but only 35% of those 65 and older have received one so far.
An independent study from respected scientists warned, however, that emerging, more immune evasive omicron subvariants could pose a problem for the boosters in the future.
The administration, meanwhile, is also bringing back free at-home Covid tests, limited to four per household, with orders shipping starting next week.
Covid cases, hospitalizations and deaths have all risen in recent weeks at the same time hospitals are getting slammed by flu and respiratory syncytial virus.
U.S. health officials have said they're not expecting a surge on the scale of last winter due to much higher levels of immunity in the population.
