The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 climbed in the final minutes of trading on Thursday to begin what many expect to be a messy trading month. The Dow turned green in the late afternoon, jumping higher at the close. The S&P 500 was down for much of the session before rallying to end the day. All of the major averages are still on pace to post losing weeks, however. While the Dow and S&P 500 were able to snap four-day losing streaks, the Nasdaq Composite posted a fifth straight day of losses for the first time since February. Stocks have been in a slump since last Friday, after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell gave hawkish comments in Jackson Hole. |
All eyes are now focused on Friday's August employment report, which is expected to show an increase in hiring across many sectors. It's also one of the last big economic reports the central bank will consider before raising rates at its meeting this month. Traders also had their eyes on the bond market Thursday, with the 2-year Treasury yield hitting its highest level since 2007. The 10-year yield also jumped, weighing on growth-oriented stocks. Nvidia was one of the biggest drags on the market, ending the day down more than 7%, after the chipmaker said on Wednesday that the U.S. government is restricting some sales in China. |
