PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
Shifting Priorities: The Future of Business Hinges on Proactive Public Health Strategies Dr. Vin Gupta, Amazon Senior Principal Scientist and Chief Medical Officer for Covid Response, said that "the big challenge of our time is how do we ventilate public spaces, workplaces… If you were to better ventilate just your workplace, increase the ventilation rate by double… (it would) increase the cognition… of a workforce by 10 percentage points. That translates to $6,500 per year in additional salary. That's productivity that you can't pay for." He also advocated for companies to hire Chief Health Officers to communicate accurate information since "50% of adult Americans receive healthcare coverage, healthcare benefits through their employer" and to focus on "the new age of benefits" since workers want in-home healthcare. "Mental telehealth will be the rage of the future over the next 10 years." The Big Picture: The Work Doesn't Matter, Results Do Ray Dalio, Bridgewater Associates Founder and "Principles" Author, and Patty McCord, Former Netflix Chief Talent Officer and "Powerful: Building a Culture of Freedom and Responsibility" Author, agreed that businesses' willingness to customize jobs and remain flexible are keys to the future of work. Dalio said, "I think the whole competition in the job market is going to be around those kinds of things." He also told CNBC's Tyler Mathisen that "the success of people is not based on how smart they are or even how hard they work as much as how adaptable they are." McCord added, "I applaud the death of the term 'best practices'… and the term 'consistency' because we've started to realize that our workers are adults and they come to work with very different circumstances." Beyond Flexibility: What Workers Want April Rinne, "Flux: 8 Superpowers for Thriving in Constant Change" Author and Futurist, explained that younger workers want a career that's "more bespoke, more customized, to use Ray's term in this regard, something that treated them and looked at them as a whole human." She told CNBC's Jane Wells that "one of the biggest shifts that I see, and this relates to career development, professional development and more broadly professional identity, is that the future of work is less about a singular pursuit of a career path and more about curating one's portfolio career." Where We Work: The Workplace Evolution Marcelo Claure, WeWork Executive Chairman and Softbank Group Int'l CEO, and Victor Coleman, Hudson Pacific Properties CEO, discussed the big changes needed to accommodate the new hybrid work environment. Claure said that "the world has changed forever and flexibility is the name of the game." He told CNBC's Andrew Ross Sorkin, "we're going to go in to the biggest disruption of commercial real estate" in which "one-third of all (the) commercial real estate market in the world or buildings in the world are going to have a flexible workspace where a desk is being used by different people at different times of the day and that's a global trend." Coleman said that not everyone likes open floor plans and shared space. "They like four walls, they like the privacy." Regardless of the configuration, he said that "tenants are fully prepared to put a ton of money, as are we as landlords, into their space to make it more conducive to whatever the future is going to look like." Transformative Innovation: Strategies for a Post-Pandemic World Catherine Bessant, Bank of America Vice Chair, Global Strategy, discussed the importance of thinking globally and why BofA is now focusing on the worst-case scenario. "The focus has to be on what if the worst happens. Not will it, but what if it does. And so, I think that's a big shift in the leadership paradigm and requires us all to think very differently as we approach every element of our tools, whether it's how we train and develop and promote and attract our people or how we think about technology." She also told CNBC's Carl Quintanilla, "I, as a leader, question the sustainability of innovation, the sustainability of engagement and culture-building in a perpetual remote office, in a remote environment, and that's why we're very focused on getting our people back to the office." Managing Through Change Michael Dell, Dell Technologies Chairman & CEO and "Play Nice but Win: A CEO's Journey from Founder to Leader" Author, explained that there's no formula for innovation. "It's a combination of deep understanding of unsolved customer problems… and a deep understanding of all the ingredients that go into technology. And then, our job is to create those solutions that solve those problems. When we do that, we will be a successful company in the future. If we don't, we go out of business. That's just the way it works." He also told CNBC's Jon Fortt that "hybrid work is here to stay… and ultimately, we're optimistic that all of this is going to lead to a better balance and life for people." POLLS: BY THE NUMBERS
