The U.S. just moved closer to distributing Covid vaccines for kids ages 5 to 11, and states are already preparing. Details below. Nate Rattner has a new survey on some employees leaving their jobs over vaccine mandates. Also, WHO warns of a rise in cases worldwide.
| FDA authorizes Pfizer's Covid vaccine for young kids | The FDA authorized the use of Pfizer and BioNTech's Covid-19 vaccine for children ages 5 to 11, a move that will make the shots available to 28 million kids in the U.S. It's not totally a done deal yet. CDC must sign off before shots can be distributed, which could come as early as next week after its advisory committee reviews the doses at a meeting Tuesday. The Biden administration is ready to roll out the first 15 million shots the first week after it's approved. -Berkeley Lovelace Jr. | | Preparations underway for kids vaccine rollout | While polling suggests 30% of parents don't plan to vaccinate their kids against Covid, another 27% are raring to go – and states are getting ready for major initial demand. Fifteen million doses of Pfizer/BioNTech's pediatric vaccine are expected to ship in the first week, with most going to pediatricians' offices, according to a survey of local public health leaders. Many states are also planning school-based clinics to ensure all kids have access. And as for the kids? They're not excited about the shot itself, but as six-year-old Mary told us, "I want the bad germ to go away." Us too, Mary. -Meg Tirrell | | Survey: 5% of unvaccinated adults quit jobs over Covid vaccine mandates | Will workers really quit en masse once Biden's vax mandate kicks in? At least 5% of unvaccinated adults say they already have left a job over a vaccine mandate, according to a new survey released by the Kaiser Family Foundation. One-quarter of workers surveyed by KFF in October said their employer has required them to get vaccinated, up from 9% in June and 19% last month. The survey comes as the Labor Department puts the finishing touches on a nationwide mandate for private companies with 100 or more employees to vaccinate or test their staff for Covid. -Nate Rattner | | Global Covid cases and deaths on the rise, WHO says | After two months of decline, Covid cases and deaths are on the rise again across the globe, World Health Organization officials said at a briefing Thursday, blaming Europe for the jump. Infections in Europe have risen every week over the last three weeks, even as cases fall in every other region across the world. Nearly 3 million new Covid cases were reported worldwide for the week ended Sunday, an increase of 4% from the previous seven days, according to the WHO's most recent epidemiological update. -Robert Towey | | Delta's AY.4.2 mutation is no reason to panic, scientists say | The subvariant — which is thought to have emerged in the U.K. over the summer — has two additional mutations affecting its spike protein, part of the virus's structure used to infiltrate cells. Despite its rise, public health officials in England have emphasized that so far, AY.4.2 does not appear to cause more severe disease or render existing vaccines less effective. And according to biologists at England's Northumbria University, the mutation has failed to take hold in several European countries, "dropping off the radar in Germany and Ireland." -Chloe Taylor | |
