Buffett's Berkshire pulls ahead of S&P in 2021 horserace

With the fourth quarter well underway, here's a look at the horserace between shares of Berkshire Hathaway and the benchmark S&P 500 stock index.

With the fourth quarter well underway, here's a look at the horserace between shares of Berkshire Hathaway and the benchmark S&P 500 stock index.   Berkshire had been in the lead for most of the year, until the S&P caught up in early September.   But over the last four weeks, the S&P has dropped slightly, while Berkshire gained roughly 2%.   As a result, Berkshire is back in front. The A shares are up 23.0%, while the more widely-held B shares are up 22.6%. The S&P has a 19.0% advance.     That's not, however, the whole story. Our charts only show the price gain of the index.   In his recent annual letters to shareholders, Buffett compares Berkshire's stock performance to the S&P with dividends reinvested. (Berkshire famously does not pay a dividend.)   Adding in its dividend return of about 1.4% right now, the S&P is up 20.4%, putting it closer to Berkshire, but still underperforming. The price of those shares in U.S. trading is used to approximate the current market value of the position.
