WEATHERING THE STORM
This was planned to be a short note, bidding adieu to summer and wishing all a safe and healthy long weekend, but Mother Nature had other plans. In the wake of Ida's destructive sweep through Louisiana and up into the Northeast, it's impossible not to acknowledge our friends and colleagues as they work to recover and overcome the devastation of one hurricane. On the heels of August's report from The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warning of the worsening climate crisis, it's hard not to view this summer's extreme weather events as a foreshadowing of what's to come. So while projections show the overall economic impact of Ida will be modest, it seems timely to recognize the effects of climate change on the future of work and businesses. August's total — the worst since January — comes with heightened fears of the pandemic and the impact that rising Covid cases could have on what has been a mostly robust recovery. The weak report could cloud policy for the Federal Reserve, which is weighing whether to pull back on some of the massive stimulus it has been adding since the outbreak in early 2020.
