Your guide to how Washington shapes business and the economy
| TUE, SEP 21, 2021 | | | Hello, President Biden made his debut today at the United Nations General Assembly. Democrats are in a pickle as they try to keep the government funded, prevent a default and pass a massive economic agenda. And the Supreme Court has set a date for its next big abortion case. Here are some stories we're following at CNBC Politics: - A new era of "relentless diplomacy": Biden, in his first speech as president before the UN General Assembly, stressed that the United States under his watch would embrace statesmanship over war in dealing with international crises. The address came as Biden and his national security team continue to deal with the fallout of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. The White House is also contending with controversy surrounding a security pact with the United Kingdom and Australia that alienated and angered France.
- Democrats make a move on the debt ceiling: Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has warned the U.S. next month will likely run out of ways to hold off the debt ceiling and a potential default. That means Congress must act soon to avoid a potential catastrophic economic situation. Democrats are attempting to pair a debt ceiling suspension with a short-term funding bill to keep the government open for business. The measure will probably pass the House, but its road is trickier in the Senate. All of this is unfolding while Biden and the Democrats work to figure out a way to pass potentially $4 trillion-plus in new spending.
- Abortion back at SCOTUS: On Dec. 1, the Supreme Court will hear a Mississippi case directly challenging the landmark Roe v. Wade decision. This comes after the nation's top court dealt a blow to abortion rights in allowing Texas to implement a law that bans the procedure after about six weeks. A decision on the Mississippi case would come in 2022, just as the midterm election campaigns will be picking up steam.
