Your guide to how Washington shapes business and the economy

| FRI, JUN 04, 2021 | | | Hello, It was a short work week, and Congress was on recess, but it was a busy four days nonetheless. The White House ramped up warnings about ransomware given the recent spate of cyber attacks, President Biden and Republican senators inched closer to an end game in infrastructure talks, and it was revealed that two of former President Trump's allies – Rep. Matt Gaetz and Postmaster General Louis DeJoy – are facing some heat from federal investigators. Here's what's happening: - June 7 or bust? The soft deadline for an infrastructure agreement was supposed to be Memorial Day. But now it's looking more like Monday. While Biden and the GOP negotiators have indicated they would make some moves to potentially appeal to each other, they are still miles and miles of repaired roads and bridges apart on how to pay for it. The president and the top Republican negotiator, Sen. Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia, are slated to talk again this afternoon.
- DOJ prods business on ransomware: The White House this week urged companies to take a more active approach to safeguard against attacks by hackers seeking to disrupt services and operations for ransom. "All organizations must recognize that no company is safe from being targeted by ransomware, regardless of size or location," reads a memo from deputy national security advisor Anne Neuberger.
- Inside Sinaloa: The drug cartel once run by the now-imprisoned Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman appears to be stronger than ever. But prosecutors might have an ace up their sleeve: El Chapo's wife, Emma Coronel Aispuro. She is being held without bail, and a plea deal is potentially in the works. "She knows where all the bodies are buried, so to speak, and she can do a lot of damage to the Sinaloa cartel," former DEA chief of international operations Mike Vigil told "American Greed," which has its season premiere 10 p.m. on Monday.
