| | FDA decision due by Monday on Biogen's Alzheimer's drug | If approved by the U.S. agency, aducanumab would be the first new medicine for Alzheimer's disease in 18 years. But it's a highly controversial decision, with some doctors saying they won't prescribe Biogen's drug if it does reach the market, because of a mixed data package supporting its application. -Meg Tirrell | | | | Moderna applies for full FDA approval of its Covid vaccine | Moderna this week asked the FDA for full U.S. approval of its Covid-19 vaccine — the second drugmaker in the U.S. to seek a biologics license that will allow it to market the shots directly to consumers. The company will submit data to the agency on a rolling basis over the coming weeks, and the approval process will likely take months. Over 100 million of the shots have already been administered in the U.S., according to data compiled by the CDC. If the FDA grants Moderna's request, it would be the Massachusetts-based company's first-ever approved product. -Berkeley Lovelace Jr. | | | | Delta variant is now in 62 countries, hot spots forming in Asia and Africa | The Covid variant first detected in India has a new name and has now spread to at least 62 countries as outbreaks surge across Asia and Africa, according to the WHO, which renamed the variants after letters in the Greek alphabet this week to reduce any country-specific stigma. The Western Pacific region is reporting its highest levels of cases and deaths since the start of the pandemic, according to the WHO's weekly update. The African region reported more than 52,000 new cases and more than 1,100 new deaths in the past week, a 22% and an 11% increase, respectively, compared with the previous week. -Rich Mendez | | | | White House lays out plan to share millions of doses with poorer nations | The White House laid out its plan to share millions of Covid-19 vaccine doses with other countries in need. The majority of the vaccine doses will be donated through COVAX, the WHO-backed immunization program. The first 25 million doses will go to countries in South and Central America, Asia, Africa as well as neighboring countries in need. The Biden administration has committed to donating 80 million doses so far. -Berkeley Lovelace Jr. | | | | Government confident India can reach vaccine target by December | The Indian government is confident that the country will be able to meet an ambitious target of having more than 2 billion coronavirus vaccine doses by the end of the year, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said. The government expects about 750 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine that is being locally produced by the Serum Institute of India and is known as Covishield. It also expects another 550 million doses of Covaxin, which is developed and produced by Indian company Bharat Biotech. Russia's Sputnik vaccine will contribute about 156 million to the predicted tally. -Saheli Roy Choudhury | |
