Your weekly update on top ETF trends
| THU, JUN 25, 2020 | | | | YOUR WEEKLY UPDATE ON TOP ETF TRENDS | | | Our guests on ETF Edge on Monday at 1 PM are Todd Rosenbluth from CFRA and Bryon Lake from JPMorgan. Join us as we discuss: - ETFs: where's the money going? Next week brings an end (mercifully) to the first half of 2020. For ETFs, some clear trends have emerged: the winner in inflows continues to be bonds, thanks to the Federal Reserve which has become a buyer of Treasuries, corporate bonds and ETFs, and munis. U.S. equities have modest inflows, but all the money is going to the top plain vanilla index funds. Emerging Markets and International ETFs, while they have recovered in price, are continuing to see outflows. The big ETF winner in 2020: #2 Vanguard, which has captured nearly 40% of all inflows. What's in store for the rest of 2020?
- Lots of discussion around Credit Suisse delisting several of its leveraged volatility Exchange Traded Notes, including the very large VelocityShares Daily 2x VIX (TVIX). This was a $1.5 billion product. You don't typically close something that big. Why? The simple answer is, ETNs are out of favor. They employ derivatives which are risky for the issuers, and there is considerable regulatory scrutiny around them. This is a neglected little corner of the ETF/ETN world that is finally starting to get some scrutiny. Those who are involved in the growting ETF world ask themselves a simple question: Does the world really need leveraged and inverse volatility products? You decide.
- Everyone's getting into the Work From Home Theme. You knew it
was going to happen. Thematic ETFs reflect economic and social memes. Direxion now has a Work from Home ETF (WFH), a mishmash of various companies including Twilio, CrowdStrike, and Zoom Video. BlackRock has also filed for a Virtual Work and Life Multisector ETF. Follows on similar demand for sports betting (BETZ).
- Gold rally continues: Gold at 8 year highs with huge inflows into $GLD and other funds.... $22b YTD, which is double the old annual record.
