Tomorrow, NASA and SpaceX will take another crack at history after a weather scrub on Wednesday. This is the first time a private company will launch astronauts into low-earth orbit, and the first time astronauts have been launched from U.S. soil in nearly a decade. We are crossing our fingers for the weather to cooperate and a safe mission.
The SpaceX launch makes us think about the power companies have in leveraging new tech to lift us higher and find bright spots, even in times like these. In a less-publicized effort, SpaceX recently received a license from the FCC "for the operation of up to 1,000,000 fixed earth stations that will communicate with its non-geostationary orbit satellite system." Aside from being a really cool technology, these 'little UFOs on a stick' have the potential to bring broadband service to rural and underserved areas in the U.S., and eventually around the world. Certainly this will be a public benefit for users, but could also allow more people to work remotely (and thus support local economies), and unleash innovation from previously unlikely places.
Companies are only just starting to stretch the bounds of 5G and AI to achieve greater efficiency and create new products in a meaningful way. But a realignment of the business workforce is needed, now more than ever. In our next virtual event in June, we'll take a deep dive into exactly that. We'll be joined by leaders from the global cloud and digital workspace leader VMware, the premier software giant Honeywell Connected Enterprise and the professional services firm putting data to work at Genpact – all of whom are betting big on digitally connected transformation.
While it seems our government is stuck on the launch pad when it comes to innovation, one hopes that private organizations like SpaceX will broaden their vision of what's possible, and reach ever higher.
