Empathy. It's not often first on the list of attributes that are used to describe great leaders. But it should be, according to many of the corporate leaders we were privileged to host on our @Work: Leadership and Management Amid Crisis Virtual Summit Wednesday. From the leadership guru Daniel Pink, to former Google head of HR Laszlo Bock, to Thrive Global Founder and CEO Arianna Huffington, empathy is a primary qualification for leadership. Arianna continued with some insight we wanted to feature in this week's note:
"The future of work is going to change and the future of life is going to change. And part of what Steve Jobs said about how the best ideas come up, in another context he also said that his best ideas came after meditation. And many of us even if we don't meditate can testify to that fact that our best ideas come in the shower or fly fishing, or basically while we're disconnected from our screens. And all the ways which we're hyper connected in our modern life. So I think during this period because unfortunately, through crisis comes some new opportunities and some new and much-needed ways to relate to each other. So when we are out of this, as Andrew Cuomo actually said yesterday, we're not going back to normal, we are going to a new normal - and both at work and in life. And one of the fundamental delusions that has been driving us all which is that in order to be successful we basically need to be on all the time. I think that's going to be completely sacrificed because we are all seeing much more clearly the price we pay for that."
Also a standout moment yesterday, best-selling author Daniel Pink revealed his insight on how leaders should be helping their employees and systems adapt during the COVID-19 crisis. He says leaders will do the right thing for their company if they view their performance as "the first line of [their] obituary." If the CEO is not taking a strong lead and being totally transparent, it may be time to look for another job. More from that in this piece.
