| US workers could forfeit a record number of vacation days this year | | | | WED, DEC 11, 2019 | | | | American workers left 768 million vacation days on the table in 2018, according to a recent study. That's a 9% increase from 2017. While the 2019 numbers are still being calculated, sadly I doubt there will be a drastic turnaround.
OK, here goes: "People, you need to take time off from work!"
An unhealthy work-life balance can lead to negative outcomes — both mental and physical. The most effective employees aren't the ones who work like robots, various studies conclude. Individuals who work hard but also make time for vacations away from their jobs are the ones who are able to maintain high levels of work efficiency and healthy well-being over the long term.
Job burnout and decreased efficiency on the job are not uncommon for workers who push themselves too hard without taking some time off for themselves, a jobs study concluded. Not taking vacation can negatively affect employee's moods at work. This includes increased irritability and decreased patience, which can strain relationships and communication with work colleagues.
An employment study concluded: Time off can stimulate an employee's creativity, improving productivity and performance. For every 10 hours of vacation time taken, productivity improves 8%. Sleep patterns can improve during vacation time because you're more able to let your natural circadian rhythms rule your bedtime and wake time. Reaction times improve when you take time for a vacation. Stress overworks the brain and when you're constantly overloading, dividing your attention between computer screens, cellphones and work conversations.
Simply put: "All work and no play makes Jack and Jill dull people."
