EDITOR'S NOTE
Hello,
This is CNBC.com politics reporter Jacob Pramuk, in for Mike Calia.
What seemed almost inevitable when Democrats flipped the House last year came to pass Wednesday night. The chamber impeached President Donald Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
We know what's supposed to happen next. Trump will become the third U.S. president to face a Senate trial on whether to remove him from office. But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has yet to send articles of impeachment to the Senate in an effort to influence the trial structure.
Trump, who is demanding a speedy trial, heads to Florida for the holidays with several victories under his belt. The House overwhelmingly passed a new North American trade deal — one of the president's economic priorities — after Democrats won concessions on enforcing labor standards. His administration is also moving to inking a tentative "phase one" trade pact with China.
Seven of the Democrats who aim to deny Trump a second term faced off in a 2020 primary debate Thursday night. They discussed their visions for trade, taxes, China policy and climate change.
