| Steve Case: The 230 cities that lost HQ2 'perhaps can create the next Amazon' | | | | THU, DEC 05, 2019 | | | | | | WHERE BUSINESS AND POLITICS CONVERGE | | | | Hi readers,
Thanks to everyone who joined us for our final Capital Exchange breakfast of 2019. This week, we're sharing a few highlights from our "Growth in the Heartland" conversation:
> OPPORTUNITY BEYOND AMAZON HQ2: Steve Case, AOL co-founder and CEO of Revolution, says that the 230 cities that missed out on Amazon's HQ2 have an opportunity to become their own startup ecosystems. If those cities "took half of the time and energy and passion they put into making the Amazon bid—rallying the community, getting people working together collaboratively—and half of the dollars they put on the table as an economic incentive to lure Amazon and refocus it on their start-up community, they perhaps can create the next Amazon."
> SUPPLY PROBLEM OF TALENT, NOT OPPORTUNITY: President and CEO of the Economic Innovation Group John Lettieri discusses a big concern for some communities: a supply problem of talent. Lettieri says that local employers are trying to expand and hire, but they can't do it, especially in a tight labor market.
> EDUCATING WORKFORCE OF THE FUTURE: Former Indiana Governor and Purdue University President Mitch Daniels shares his thoughts on the what skills are necessary for today's workforce. One critical area: Daniels says that it's their near term goal that every Purdue graduate leave with a grounding in data science and analytics. "I don't know a business, or for that matter a nonprofit, that isn't eagerly searching for people who can query, manipulate, and learn from databases."
As always, there's been no shortage of news in Washington – from trade to tech policy to the ongoing impeachment hearings. We've included a few links below to catch you up on what you may have missed.
