A NOTE FROM BOB
2019: New ETFs keep coming. ETF creation is just about at the same level as 2018, according to ETF.com, which reports roughly 200 new U.S.-listed ETFs had come to market through the end of October, just short of the nearly 230 funds that launched during the same period in 2018. Several "thematic" ETFs have attracted attention, including the Procure Space ETF (UFO) and "Vegan" ETF, the U.S. Vegan Climate ETF (VEGN). New ESG ETFs have attracted considerable assets: the Xtrackers MSCI ESG (USSG) has attracted $1.5 billion in assets since going public in March, and the iShares ESG USA Leaders (SUSL) has attracted nearly $1.7 billion in assets since going public in May.
Pot craze. Elsewhere, while there was no Bitcoin ETFs in 2019, there were five cannabis ETFs launched. Hope for a cannabis craze fizzled very quickly though, burned by poor performance.
Most popular ETF of 2019? Hard to say, but it's hard to argue with the iShares Edge MSCI Min Vol U.S.A. ETF (USMV), which became a modest sensation, attracting $35 billion in assets, on a mid-year craze for safe, low-volatility stocks like Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Verizon and McDonald's to counteract concerns about trade wars and the slowing global economy.
