Stocks extended their gains for a second session on Tuesday as bond yields ticked lower and traders weighed the possibility of a rally from the recent 2022 lows. The major averages soared to start the day and maintained gains throughout the trading session. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped back over the 30,000 mark, while the S&P 500 posted its biggest two-day gain since March 2020. The Nasdaq Composite was the outperformer. Early on, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that job openings plunged by more than 1.1 million in August, providing a potential early sign that the U.S. labor gap may be narrowing. Also, the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note inched downward Tuesday, and the dollar index retreated back to 110. |
Still, investors are split on whether the market has found a true bottom or if this bounce is temporary. The S&P 500 energy sector was an outperformer, but cruise lines Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian Cruise Line were among the biggest winners in the broad-market index. Twitter shares closed higher by 22%, after Elon Musk revived his deal to buy the social media giant at the original price offered in April. |
