On Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 246.76 points, or 0.6%. The S&P 500 gained 0.6%, and the Nasdaq Composite added 1.2%. The first trading session of 2022 ended with record closes for the Dow and the S&P 500. Apple was the story of the day as the stock reached a $3 trillion market cap in intraday trading, becoming the first U.S. company to do so. The milestone is significant as it shows investors' continued bullishness on Apple's ability to grow. Meanwhile, Tesla gained 13.5% during the session after it reported 308,600 deliveries in the fourth quarter, beating expectations. The 10-year Treasury yield topped 1.6%, giving a boost to bank stocks like Bank of America, which jumped 3.8%. Shares of Wells Fargo also climbed, ending the day 5.7% higher after an upgrade from Barclays. Stocks tend to gain at the beginning of a new year, Bank of America noted on Monday. The S&P 500 has risen in the first week of the calendar year in 11 of the last 13 years, with an average gain of about 1.6%. |
