The major averages on Thursday ended another session little changed as investors eye Friday's May jobs report.

However, volatility in the so-called meme stocks kept the market interesting.   Stocks that benefit from economic reopening capped losses by the major averages on Thursday as better-than-expected employment data boosted sentiment. May's private job growth gained at its fastest clip in nearly a year, according to ADP. Total hires came to 978,000 for the month, a big jump from April's 654,000 and the largest gain since June 2020.   Plus, weekly jobless claims came in slightly above estimates.   The Dow ended the day 23.34 points lower and the S&P 500 dipped about 0.4%. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite dropped more than 1%, as the Big Tech names all closed in the red.    The Reddit-favored stocks stole the spotlight on Thursday, particularly movie theater operator AMC Entertainment. The company said in the morning it was going to sell 11.5 million shares only to announce several hours later it already completed its stock offering, raising $587.4 million in additional capital. Other meme stocks like BlackBerry also experienced wild price swings.   Bank of America told clients on Thursday that "AMC exhibits all three signposts that its rally could be nearing an end (acceleration in price and stock volume, increase in volatility, and a turn lower in the call-to-put volume ratio)." However, mentions of AMC and its counterparts are rising on social media in the past few weeks.   Ahead of Friday's nonfarm payrolls report, the economy is expected to show growth of 671,000 jobs in May, according to economists polled by Dow Jones. The economy added 266,000 jobs in April.
