The addition of Tesla into the S&P 500 at the close next Friday will be one of the biggest trading days in history, but it is only the most recent example of an ongoing trend: index rebalancings are now major trading events. These once-obscure events have become important because the amount of dollars tied to passive (index-based) investing has skyrocketed in the last few years, so the volume of trading that occurs when the indexes are rebalanced due to additions or deletions has also dramatically increased. The rise of ETFs has also created other major trading events around their rebalancings as well.
