VIEW IN BROWSER | SUBSCRIBE FRI, SEP 25, 2020 CNBC POLITICS EDITOR'S NOTE Hello,   It's the topic that just won't die: Will there be a new stimulus package that helps small businesses and puts more cash in the pockets of Americans?   For a few weeks, it looked dead in the water. Despite assurances that negotiators on both sides wanted to get something done, nothing did. Now as we've gotten closer to the election, it looks like there's a little more urgency to get something done. Or, at least, there's more urgency for Republicans and Democrats to show their supporters that they're working on it.   This week, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell warned lawmakers: People who are treading water because of their savings could potentially see that money run out soon. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, a lead negotiator for President Trump, has said repeatedly that the economy needs new, targeted stimulus. House Democrats, likewise, are working on a $2.4 trillion measure, which is smaller than the bill they passed months ago, hoping to get talks moving along again.   At this point it is surprising that Congress hasn't passed new stimulus, or that Trump hasn't pushed harder for it. Sending checks to voters in the middle of an election campaign would at the very least be shrewd politics. More importantly, though, it would further buoy a shaky economy as the country waits anxiously for a viable coronavirus vaccine.
