He pledged to serve "all Americans," not just his base, in his attempt to paint a stark contrast between him and President Trump.   Whether Biden, who has opened a consistent national lead over Trump, gets a polling bump from the convention is to be determined. The former vice president, speaking directly to the camera and without a crowd to cheer him on, mixed optimism with a serious tone that sought to reflect the dire times we're experiencing. CNBC's Christina Wilkie breaks down the speech Biden has been striving to give for over three decades.   Next up: The Republicans host their convention starting Monday. Each night is expected to showcase Trump in some way, culminating in his acceptance speech next Thursday.   Here are other stories the CNBC Politics team has been covering: Steve Bannon, the former Trump campaign chief and White House strategist, was arrested on fraud charges related to a private project to build a wall along the U.S. southern border.
